The Cold I Breathe, Pt. 1

I wanted to give you all a sample to look at for my latest project, The Cold I Breathe.
I hope you enjoy, and please feel free to shoot me any criticisms or thoughts you may have.

The story of Dr, Halwen Lear is inspired by the setting of Hinterland Studio’s The Long Dark. All rights and licenses to the title, Wintermute story, and its gameplay are the sole property of Hinterland Studios and I would like to stress that I make no claim to ownership nor creation of the world they’ve built.

The Long Dark is a gem that I stumbled across during its initial alpha gameplay release. I was immediately enamored by its quiet sense of desperation and fear; struggling to survive the dangers of the frozen wasteland they’d created was both thrilling and cathartic. I’m thankful for every minute I’ve been allowed to put into their excellent experience.

Below is a PDF of the first edit for the beginning of The Cold I Breathe, which will likely be updated soon as I chip away at its stone to find the final sculpture beneath.

Pt. 1

Cheers all,

Cope, Trevor V.

  1. Ah dude, you seriously missed out on the cattails in the first part. Every part of the cattail is useful. The ‘fluff’ can be used like down in insulating yourself against the cold & also as a tinder to start a fire. I was looking for you to use it after he noticed it. I love reading new writers, I follow many of the free sites on the web just to find them. If I may suggest for future ‘background’ information you should start following homesteaders and survivalist channels on sites like Instagram and YouTube. I have learned so much from them- such as most, but definitely not all, pine needles are edible & even some barks, how to use my broken glasses to start a fire, how to build the best basic shelter in the winter if lost. Now I am back to the story….

    • Thanks so much for taking the time to read.
I’ve always loved the usefulness of cattails, from the slight calories you can get eating them to the myriad of applications the head offers, which you eloquently enumerated.
For the sake of brevity and the characters own dearth of knowledge I decided to keep their use to a minimum but I definitely agree on their utility. I hope you enjoy the rest of it.
      Best.
